TasFloraTagger

TasFlora Tagger helps you rename field photos consistently using plant names (Family, Genus, Species) and generates a ready-to-copy caption. It is designed for quick use on a phone during or after a walk.

Privacy and storage: Your photos are not stored permanently. They exist only temporarily while being processed and renamed. They are not visible to administrators and are not retained after processing. The only copy that persists is the file you download to your own device. Do not refresh or close the browser tab until your renamed files have finished downloading.

To use the app:

  1. Add photos. You can either click “Browse…” and select up to 10 photos (JPG or HEIC), or drag and drop photos into the upload area if your device supports it. Once the photos are loaded, the app is ready for tagging.

  2. Choose plant name. You can begin at any level: Species (most specific), Genus, or Family. The dropdowns are linked. Selecting a Family filters the Genus list to that family. Selecting a Genus filters the Species list to that genus. Selecting a Species will automatically imply its Genus and Family where possible. You can type into any dropdown to search instead of scrolling. You can change your selection at any time before downloading.

  3. After making your selections, you will see “New filename will be:”. The filename is automatically generated from your selected Family, Genus, and Species to keep names consistent and searchable. You can leave the generated filename as it is (recommended for consistency), or you can edit it manually before downloading if needed. If editing, use simple text and avoid special characters such as / \ : * ? “ < > |.

  4. A caption is created automatically based on your selections. You can add to or modify this caption to include location, notes, people, or other details. You can use the caption for websites, reports, email, or other submissions as required.

  5. To save the renamed photo, click the download button. The renamed file will download to your device. If multiple photos are uploaded, download each renamed file as prompted. Do not close or refresh the page until downloads are complete.

  • On iPhone or iPad using Safari, downloads are saved in the Files app, usually under Downloads unless you have changed your default location. Open the Files app, tap Browse, then tap Downloads to find your renamed files.

  • On a Mac, downloads are saved in Finder under Downloads unless you have changed your browser settings. Open Finder and click Downloads in the sidebar. Sort by Date Modified if needed to find the most recent files.

  • On Windows (PC), downloads are saved in File Explorer under Downloads unless your browser settings have been changed. Open File Explorer and click Downloads. Sort by Date Modified if needed.

If you cannot find your downloaded file, check your device’s Downloads folder and sort by most recent. If the app appears slow the first time, this can occur if it has not been used recently. If the Species list feels long, type a few letters to narrow the search. If you are unsure of the Species, select the level you are confident about (Family or Genus). You do not need to complete all three fields.
